MRI & 3T MRI

MRI, which stands for Magnetic Resonance Imaging, is a noninvasive medical test which helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.  MR Imaging uses a magnetic field, radio frequency pulses and a computer to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and virtually all other internal body structures. Detailed MR images allow physicians to better evaluate various parts of the body and certain diseases that may not be assessed adequately with other imaging methods, such as x-ray, ultrasound or CT.

All MRI scanners at Peninsula Imaging have large bore technology and increased weight limit tables which accommodate all size and/or claustrophobic patients, while delivering outstanding image detail. All machines are equipped with headphones enabling patients to listen to their favorite music during their exam.

Please bring any pertinent biomedical device cards to your MRI.

If possible, do not wear any jewelry or hair clips as they will need to be removed prior to your MRI.
We also recommend the removal of all clothing except underpants as some clothing is infused with metal and can cause burns.

MRI Abdomen
  • Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to exam.

MRI Pelvis
  • Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam.

MRI Enterography
  • Nothing to eat or drink 6 hours prior to exam. Please arrive 90 minutes prior to exam to drink oral contrast.

MRI Prostate
  • Nothing to eat or drink 8 hours prior to exam.
  • Take a laxative at 5:00 pm the night before exam.
  • An Enema is required 1-2 hours prior to exam time.
  • You will be positioned on a moveable examination table as part of your MRI exam. We try our best to make these comfortable for our patients.
  • If a contrast material is used for the MRI exam, a Technologist will insert an intravenous (IV) line into a vein in your hand or arm.  Additional series of images will be taken during or following the injection.
  • MRI exams generally include multiple runs (sequences), some of which may last several minutes.
  • Depending on the type of exam, the entire exam is usually completed in 15-45 minutes.
